Illegal Immigrant Sentenced to 55 Years for Killing Tri-State Couple and More in Drunk Driving Crash

Repeat Offender, Repeat Tragedy

America’s refusal to enforce its own immigration laws is destroying families across the nation. In June 2007, Jesus Bernal, an illegal immigrant with two previous DUI convictions, proved once again how deadly our border failures can be. Bernal’s choices behind the wheel led to the deaths of three people and the serious injury of two others. He was drunk, reckless, and driving despite a long record that should have kept him off American streets forever.

The court in Cincinnati handed Bernal a fifty-five year sentence for vehicular manslaughter, but no sentence will bring back the lives he destroyed. These victims were mothers, fathers, and children with bright futures who lost everything because the system allowed a dangerous criminal to keep coming back. Bernal’s presence in this country, after multiple convictions, is an indictment of every politician and bureaucrat who refuses to make public safety a priority.

When Will Enough Be Enough?

This was not Bernal’s first time driving drunk, and it probably would not have been his last. Why was he still here? Why were his previous crimes not enough to keep him off the roads and out of the country for good? The answers are painfully obvious. America’s borders are broken, and enforcement is a joke. While families grieve, politicians offer excuses. While dangerous repeat offenders like Bernal roam free, citizens pay with their lives.

It is time for Americans to demand leaders who will finally protect our communities from the repeat offenders our failed system keeps letting in. Every time the government refuses to act, another tragedy like this one becomes inevitable.
